You can decorate any country site, even very small, with the help of a water garden. It is not necessary to acquire the basis in the store, you can make it by yourself. To create such a garden with your own hands will take a little time, and the cost will be minimal in this case. You can make a garden of small size, so it does not take up much space on the territory and at the same time is mobile.
Water garden to be able to transport should be small in size, for example, 800x400x250 millimeters. It can be made of boards available in the dacha, such as cedar, fir or pine board of thickness of 25 millimeters. If desired, the size of your water garden can be increased, but the too large size of such product does not allow to move it from place to place due to the fact that the body of the water garden can be tough enough.
Creating a water garden
At the marked bottom of the box should be established a board separator. The ratio of water and earth stations, you can choose any, for example, 3: 1. For the tightness of the internal compartments of a water garden, you will need plastic liners that you can make yourself or use the ready ones. Just be careful if you are going to have fish in the water part, the used sealant must be suitable for such use and must not be toxic.
Fill in the dry bay of a water garden. To do this, you need to drill holes for drainage in the bottom of this compartment, then fill it with the soil. If the alleged plants for planting have different requirements for care, it is necessary to place them in separate containers.
To plant aquatic plants, the bottom compartment is required to be put with bricks. This will allow placing the containers with plants below the water level of about 5 centimeters. As containers can be used, ordinary flower pots or plastic bottles, cut to the required size. Tanks are filled with earth, short of about 2 cm to the edge. In soil are planted plants, and the land on top is sprinkled with small pebbles. Decorative elements can supplement the aqueous part. If you decide to breed fish, then you can put into the water algae, which are sold in any pet store, for extra producing of the oxygen necessary for fishes.
Fountains are adorable! Relive the pond, setting a fountain in it. Spurting water will create a unique effect, surprising and delighting all who comes to the garden. In addition, fountains are useful because during the work they enrich the air with oxygen.
Essentially, fountains – are a jet of water of different configurations, which rise up and fall down with sparkling drops. This simplicity is not always appreciated, so the search is on for a more refined method of spraying water.
The variety of shapes of fountains and spraying of water, can be achieved with the help of modern underwater pump. Beginners, perhaps, better to choose a simple spraying fountain, jets of various shapes are created with interchangeable nozzles adapted for typical underwater pumps.
Types of fountains:
- Fountain – geyser is perfect for an open, windswept area. For it you need a powerful underwater pump.
- Fountain – bell. The most calm kind of structure for running water. They are good to use in small formal ponds, quiet corners of the garden, or in the mini – reservoirs of natural style.

There are rules regulating the use of fountains: if the garden is windswept it is reasonable to limit the height of any jet fountain with half of radius of the reservoir. In sheltered garden, a jet of water at a height may be equal to the diameter of the pond or pool.
Simple single fountain jet is often a visual center, but it also can be used to separate spaces or interrupting perspectives, forcing the viewer to stop before going further.

Pumps and filters.
Pumps with filters are used for pumping water. They work from the network and through the impeller take water into one end of the water tap line and deliver it at the other end connected to the water body, such as a fountain.
There are two main types of pumps:
- low voltage submersible
- high voltage located on the surface of water.
In ponds and fountains, we basically only use submersible pumps. Circuit breaker eliminates the danger of electric shock. To each pump is attached also the filter and more often it is built directly into the pump, but sometimes (when the size of the pond is great) it is installed detached from the pump.
Even a small child won’t be drowned in this waterfall, as it has no open water source. However, you’ll be able to enjoy the movement and murmur of water, several cascades and a small stream. You can create it all without an open waterfall. The trick is in the underground pump chamber. It is hidden with the stones and pebbles. The filtration goes through this filling. There is a receiving bowl with the pouring in the upper part of the cascades. It is connected with the pump chamber by means of corrugated hose. The whole construction is installed in the waterproofing area, which excludes the leakage of water from the pondless waterfall. The stream bed and cascades are made of stone.
It is very pleasant to have an open waterfall with crystal clear water on the garden-plot. It creates a nature comfort and gives the additional humidifying and coolness. If you have an opportunity, you can complete it with the stream and cascades. As elsewhere, there is no limit to perfection: you can build a bridge over the stream or pond, install the stationary of floating fountain, and complete the composition with the fog generator or decorative lighting. Water is a center of attraction of any garden. Sitting at the water, we experience the most unusual feelings: enjoy the coolness on a hot day, contemplate the ripple in a light breeze, rest and calm down. Perhaps, that’s why the artificial waterfall is one of the most visited places in the garden. It is enough to look at the decorative water feature to determine the character and style of the whole garden. In the regular landscapes, the artificial water reservoirs are symmetrical.
They have a strict geometric shape (square, rectangle, and circle). They are often decorated with the fountains, sculptures and flowerpots. The most important part of the fountain is the pump. Ordinary household pumps do not work here, because they would wear out too quickly. A fountain should run virtually without a break throughout the summer. It is better to opt for one of the models with a working resource from 30 to 50 thousand hours. In terms of the five warmest months of the year, from May to September, the service life of the pump is between 9 and 13 years old. The pump is usually installed at the bottom of the reservoir, on concrete or metal stand, so as not to clog the particles of soil and sand – the main enemy of the fountain equipment. Also there are floating models. Fountain pumps work on electricity. For the reliability of the pump filters, that protect the engine from clogging, are integrated into the mechanism. Most of the pumps allow you to adjust the water flow rate – this is important, especially when it comes to small water bodies.
The height of the fountain depends on the water pressure and the size of the reservoir, the form of water picture – on the nozzle. The nozzle forms a water flow and that ultimately determines the appearance of the fountain. The choice of nozzles, perhaps, gives the greatest pleasure, because the number of water paintings is colossal and types are quite different. Often homeowners buy several different nozzles and change them depending on your mood. Nozzles for fountains are made of plastic, steel or copper. Some of them are raised above the pond mirror, while others are drown in the water. Others are going under gravel to create the effect of a spring battering from the water. The simplest and therefore the most common design is a stream one. Although a lot of them is difficult to call simple one: there are spinning flowers and foam pillars and traditional French gardens “pirouettes” on a graceful curved frame. Technologically nozzles like “bell” and “lava” are a little more compound. They force the water out through the gap between the two disks and form a continuous thin coating in the form of a hemisphere. The most common types of nozzles are lava (the bell), the volcano (cascade), and a geyser.
Interior, sculptures and indoor fountains serve as a decorative ornament on the balcony or terrace, just where you need it. Water intake is carried out in the lower part of the pump and, through the rotation of a balanced rotor work particularly quiet. Filter basket is made of stainless steel, which ensures long-lasting operation of the pump.
A small fountain in the backyard that does not require wiring, which is activated at sunrise, is the perfect solution for the exterior of your home. Solar powered fountains are a relatively new invention, which has already gained a lot of fans. Its quite simple design provides an installation devoid of any inconveniences. Solar pond fountains maintenance also does not take much time. There are fountains different versions of these fountains, depending on the company’s products and customer requirements.
Fountains on solar batteries are a great alternative to traditional types of fountains. Their main advantage is the autonomy of the pump that does not require power. As it is clear from the title, fountains work because solar energy accumulated by solar cells. By way of installation of solar panels, there are two types of fountains:
- Solar powered fountains with built-in photocells
Solar panels are located directly in the bowl of the fountain. They can be used in any place open to the sunlight: lawn, terrace, near the beautiful swimming pool or in front of the main entrance to the house. Floating solar fountains can be put down into a pond or lake.
- Solar powered fountains with remote photocells
Solar cells of these fountains are mounted on a separate panel, which can be located pretty far away from the fountain. Solar-powered garden fountains can be installed under any tree, hanging solar cells panel on the upper branches.

But there are also some disadvantages that should be considered:
- Fountains operate only while the sun is shining. In the evening and night pumps stop working.
- Due to the fact that the intensity of sunlight is constantly changing, fountains work with variable pressure. You will not have an ability to adjust the power of the jet.
- Sunlight even in winter will cause the pump. As you can imagine, it will quickly lead to pump failure. Therefore, in the winter it is recommended to remove the fountains in a dark room or store them at temperatures above 0 ° C.
Despite some shortcomings, solar-powered fountains are becoming increasingly attractive for owners of private houses. A wide range of different styles and models allows to choose a fountain of the right size and design for any kind of landscape.

Decorative fountains for the backyard will help to create such “places of power”. In addition, they are also perfectly moisturizing the air that is simply irreplaceable in the hot summer days.
Previously, when for the fountain installing it was necessary to lay a complex system of pipes, it was not a cheap pleasure, but also a quite troublesome one. Modern fountains for the garden do not need a connection to the centralized water supply system, and their operation is simple and straightforward. The main thing that you will need is a tank filled with water and electrical pump. As a ‘tank’ a natural or artificial reservoir, pond or pool can be used. For a very compact fountain the minimum dimensions of a pool should equal 1,2 × 1,5 meters at the appropriate depth of 1 to 1.3 meters.
All the water that is ‘thrown’ goes back to the main pool, so the width of the pond should be relevant, otherwise your fountain will soon have nothing to flow. Maximum dimensions are almost unlimited, and depend solely on the capabilities of the owner. It should, however, take into account that to maintain a fountain, located in a large basin is much easier than the small one: it needs to be cleaned rarely and it is a more viable option for the ecological balance of the pond. Fountains can be equipped with two types of water pumps:
Drowned pump – is located in the center of the pool under water and works on the principle of a centrifuge. It is easy to use, cheap and reliable.
The pump on the surface – is set on the edge of the pool and is mainly used for maintenance of large fountains and cascading waterfalls.
If the area of a backyard is limited, but you still want to have a fountain, then you should consider purchasing the ready-made mini-fountain.
There is no need to explain what the fountain is. But the concept of “water slide” means hill of stones arranged. On top of there is a spring, the water from which flows into the pond as a river line. Fountains and slides are not just for decoration. Thanks to them the water is not stagnant and saturated with oxygen, which is essential if the stocked pond.
The waterfall is formed when a stream of water falls from a considerable height at least 1.5-2.0 meters. Size and shape of the jet can be controlled through drains. For example, a powerful stream can be obtained if to pass large amounts of water through the narrow drains. With limited water entry it is running over the surface of a massive boulder. Fine smooth surface is obtained when a flat drain is fenced in with lateral guiding borders.
Cascades are formed by small changes in elevation on the path of a moving stream, speeding on the mountain course. Cascades can be created using artificial reservoirs offered in specialized shops, but these cascades are strongly lose in comparison with natural rifts of blocks laid in the riverbed.
Design of the fountain, cascade or water slide begins with the definition of water picture jet. Depending on the customer the appropriate fountain nozzle (nozzle) of plastic (the cheapest), stainless steel, brass or bronze (the most expensive) is chosen. The higher and wider is a jet than the more powerful pump is required. The nozzle is connected either directly to the discharge nozzle of the pump, or through a system of pipes or hoses.
The principal differences of the fountain pump from any other submersible pump:
First, it consumes relatively small amount of energy: the standard model, which creates a meter height jet, has an engine capacity of just 40 watts.
Secondly, such a pump has a very long service life of up to 60 000 hours. If the package says ‘five years guarantee’ it means five years of continuous operation.
Third, the pump must operate without noise and vibration.
Fourth, such a device pumps quite dirty water, in which there are grains of sand, bits of seaweed and so on. So, to water features are not clogged, the filter pump is equipped with a sponge or a jacket with holes. The ability to change the pressure-flow characteristics of the fountain pump is necessarily provided. Adjustment takes place ‘on the passage’ (part of the water is discharged back into the water body) or “by power” – by changing the rotor speed (the more expensive models). In the latter case, the pump can be controlled remotely using the remote console (if it is included to the pump supply package).
